Caerwyn Pinney (she/her) is a trans femme visual artist, a first generation settler of Guyanese and Welsh heritage she lives and works on the traditional lands of the First Nations Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas; Hamilton Ontario.
Pinney's work embraces the strange, ominous, and wondrous qualities of city life. Working in light-based installation, sculpture, new media, and text, she grapples with the exchange of information which occurs on the liminal boundaries of interior/exterior urban space. Inspired by the set design of dystopian and arthouse cinema her work places the viewer into the dual role voyeur and passerby, simulating the membranes and boundaries of the built environment in ways which encourage contemplation and engagement from the viewer as a participant in the work.
Seeking to understand the cyclic nature between built environment and inhabitant, Pinney's work posits the city as a site which both isolates and connects through shared boundaries and rhythms. A recurring theme within her work is the not-yet qualities of urban space and city dwellers, how our own constant becoming and unbecoming is reflected in our environment and it's potential to both hold and consume.
